About Wellesley Youth Field Hockey
Wellesley Scoops Field Hockey started during the summer of 2014 by two dedicated moms (Kelly Uller & Meghan Swenson) who decided to introduce the sport of field hockey to 40 of our 1st & 2nd grade daughters. USA Field Hockey provided unlimited support, including equipment grants and the FUNdamentals curriculum.
Wellesley Scoops partnered with Wellesley College's varsity field hockey program to help provide turf field space and student-athlete coaching. In return, Wellesley Scoops provides a donation and funding back to the college and their varsity field hockey program.
Since 2014, Wellesley Scoops has grown to offer field hockey in both the fall (full season) and the spring (4-week season). Since towns in our area lack formalized programs, we have players from Wellesley, Newton, Needham, Dover, Weston and other areas.
Fall 2017, Wellesley Scoops started to offer a more competitive try-out based team (U14 & U12). This team was coached by Wellesley College's varsity field hockey coaches and other hired experienced coaches. The team travels to play other local area clubs and participates in a few local tournaments.
Fall 2019, the Commonwealth Field Hockey League was founded and run by Franklin's recreation department. Most of the towns participating in this league are located centrally around Franklin and southeastern MA. Wellesley Scoops led a Wellesley based team to play other towns in this league.
Keeping with the momentum and popularity of youth field hockey, the future of Wellesley Field Hockey looks bright. During the summer of 2020, Wellesley Scoops rebranded to Wellesley Youth Field Hockey. We have evolved to a town-based youth field hockey program which participates in travel league play.
In Spring 2021, WFYH introduced a spring league for our players. Teams play 7v7 on a shorter field to promote more touches on the ball and continue to develop players' stick skills. Wellesley invited other town programs to come play in Wellesley on Saturday afternoons/evenings. We have grown to include over a dozen different programs over the years, some traveling as far as Hingham & Cape Cod! This program provides an excellent opportunity for players to try field hockey in the spring and not having to travel outside of Wellesley!
Wellesley Youth Field Hockey's philosophy is to introduce the sport of field hockey through teaching fundamental skills focusing on player safety, quality instruction while having fun and building player confidence. We are a 501(c)-3 non-profit organization registered in Massachusetts.
We will continue to provide support to local area programs primarily supporting the development and growth of youth girls and boys playing field hockey. For more information, please don't hesitate to contact us at admin@wellesleyfieldhockey.com.
To date, Wellesley Scoops has introduced the sport of field hockey to over 1,800 players.
